Faucets

The faucet aerators are not frequently thought about when homeowners are taking care of their plumbing. Your faucet aerator screws into the tip of your faucet and provide a steady stream of water and air. Anything that gets caught in your faucet can cause debris to build up around your faucet’s aerators. If the faucet’s water is running slower than usual, it might be time to clean out your aerators. To clean the aerators, you should follow these steps:

  1. Loosen the aerator with a wrench or pliers (put a cloth over the cap so as not to damage it with the wrench).
  2. Take the cap off once it loosens.
  3. Take apart the aerator but remember the order of the parts so that you can put them back correctly.
  4. Flush the aerator screen and water restrictor with water.
  5. If necessary, use a needle to unclog smaller parts of the aerator screen.
  6. Reassemble the aerator and screw it back onto the faucet.

Water Heater

The amount of hot water needed in your home during the holidays can double or triple depending on how many guests you have. The extra hot water can cause your water heater to strain and possibly stop working all together. To ensure that your water heater is being properly taken care of, check to see if the temperature is set at 120 degrees Fahrenheit and no higher. Your water heater should also be flushed of debris at least once per year. This will help to prolong the life of your water heater and keep it functioning properly when you have guests over.
