Thankfully, there are proactive steps you can take to keep your unit running smoothly all summer long. Even if you missed your spring AC maintenance tune-up, you don’t have to sweat it with these tips from our experts at Bacon Plumbing Heating Air Electric.
The last thing you want on a hot summer day is your ac unit blowing hot air or freezing up, so let’s discuss how to avoid AC problems this summer and when it’s time to call the professionals.
Change the Air Filter
Checking the air filters on your air conditioning unit is the first step to avoiding problems this summer. If the filter becomes too dirty or clogged, the cold air will get trapped in the system, causing your air conditioner to blow hot air. Cleaning the filter and replacing it at least every 90 days should keep the cool air flowing dependably. That said, if you have dogs or cats in the house, you may want to change it once a month, as pet hair and dander can quickly build up in the system.
Clear the Area Around Your AC Unit
If your air conditioning unit is outside, you’ll want to clear any debris surrounding the unit as part of your regular lawn or outdoor maintenance routine. Grass, leaves, twigs, and other materials can become stuck in the fan, which could cause the AC to freeze up.
When the system has debris stuck inside, it’s likely to run continuously, accelerating wear and tear on your unit. If you suspect that something is stuck inside your HVAC unit that you can’t easily reach, call an expert to inspect and remove the obstruction.
Keep Doors and Windows Closed
This one may seem obvious. But while coming in and out of the house during summer BBQs and backyard parties, it’s easy to forget to keep exterior doors and windows closed while the AC is running. Remember the 20-Degree Rule
We know—It’s hard to accept this in Texas, but to avoid putting undue stress on your air conditioner, think about the 20-degree rule. Setting your thermostat to anything 20 degrees less than the outside temperature will only force it to run continuously. To prolong the life of your system and reduce the chance of it quitting entirely, be mindful of the temperature differential. For example, if it’s 95 degrees outside, try to set your thermostat to no lower than 75.

Fans can help keep you and your family cool on days when you want to set your thermostat a few degrees warmer. Schedule Regular AC Maintenance & Get Ducts Inspected
Regular AC maintenance and repair is the most practical way to prevent problems in the summer. We recommend getting an AC inspection and tune-up annually. During this inspection, the technician will thoroughly check ad clean your system to ensure it’s as efficient as possible. They’ll also be able to identify any small problems before they become expensive repairs.
We also recommend air duct inspection every 3 to 5 years to ensure there are no leaks before the heat arrives. It’s best to get your entire unit, including air ducts, checked in the spring, but if you haven’t had AC maintenance yet, better late than never.
